JKOnTheRun today posted on his blog that Taiwan based AU Optronics one of the world’s three most prevalent manufacturers of thin film transistor liquid crystal display panels (TFT LCD) is projecting sales for UMPCs/Mini-Notebooks to surpass the 10 million mark and possibly reach as high as 15 million before years end.
What makes AU Optronics an expert on this subject? They produced the little displays for last year’s biggest hit, the Eee PC for ASUS.
JK also points out that although the Eee PC was such a big hit last year, the entire Ultra-Mini PC market only sold a few hundred thousand. Fot this type of dramatic growth and the price-point decline due to the ubiquitous nature of LCD displays there’s no telling how far this market will climb over the next 18 to 24 months.
Consider Microsoft recent demonstration for their Multi-Touch capabilities in Windows 7, and I think you can see where I’m going with this. I mean after all can you imagine how many applications that software, along with the growing (or should I say shrinking) UMPC/Ultra-Mini market can produce. The possibilities are virtually endless in my humble opinion.
