In an earlier post we wrote about an interview ZDNet had with Scott Shutter, AMD’s notebook division brand manager, where he apparently expressed little immediate interest in the UMPC/Subnotebook market. Well, perhaps that was taken out of context as we now learn AMD has new contenders to the Eee PC/Subnotebook/Netbook (or whatever you want to call it) family, with these pics coming out of Computex:

Word has it that this 8.9 inch baby sports Linux and comes with 1GB of RAM, an AMD Turion64X2 CPU and the ATI RS690 chipset.
While this smaller version with a touch screen (screams out to be called a UMPC in my Netbook, oops…) [more after the jump]

has a 7 inch 1280 x 600 (as we said) touch screen display, AMD Turion64X2, 1GB RAM, either a 60 or an 80GB hard drive, 2 regular and 1 mini USB ports and a 2.5 hour battery.
Here’s a video of this machine in action: [via Aving.net]

My impression is that AMD is either playing it’s card very close to the vest regarding their plans over UMPC, or are trying not to be lumped in with other new Intell and VIA based products by playing semantics games (”This isn’t a UMPC, this is a Very Tiny Folding Internet Accessor”.
Either way, the marketing spin coming from AMD these days is fast, furious and quite confusing.
